What’s Happening at the Mount Airy Public Library

Special Notice

The Mount Airy Public Library will be operating out of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church (319 Rockford Street) from four to six months due to massive renovations at our 145 Rockford Street location. If you will turn down Patterson Avenue and then make the first left into the back parking lot, you will find us at the first door. We will have a book drop soon.

We have four computers available for public use and a limited selection of books to check out. Most of our collection is in storage, but we can borrow books from all across the state and help you with e-books.

Adult Weekly Events

Due to our renovations, all events will take place at the Surry County Senior Center, 401 Technology Lane, Ste 100.

Hooked – Wednesdays at 3 p.m. – Join our crochet and knitting club, Open for all skill levels. Bring your own yarn and make the group project, or bring your own project to work on. Join our crochet and knitting club, Open for all skill levels. We meet at Pages Books & Coffee.

Tai Chi – Fridays at 10 a.m. – Experience meditation in motion. All skill levels are welcome. We meet at Surry County Senior Center at 401 Technology Lane, Suite 100.

Childrens’ Events

Toddler Time Storytime – Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. – (ages 2 and 3) – Join us for stories, songs and movement. We will meet at Pages Books & Coffee.

Adult Monthly Events

Copies of all book club books are available at our temporary location.

  • Cooking Club – The second Tuesday of the month. January 14 at 2 p.m. -Special Ingredient: Cinnamon or Peppermint. Bring any dishes you would like to make with the special ingredients. Come celebrate the new year with us and share your recipe. We will meet at out Haymore location.
  • Murder, Mystery and Mayhem Book Club – Meets the last Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m.. We will meet at Slate’s Mercantile at 140 W Pine St. – January’s selection is “Met Her On the Mountain: The Murder of Nancy Morgan” by Mark I. Pinsky.
  • Plaid Cloth Book Club – Every Second Wednesday at Noon, at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History.
    Community Book Club – Meets the last Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m. We will meet at Slate’s Mercantile at 140 W Pine St. January’s selection is, “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt.
  • Chapters Book Club – Every Third Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Are you looking for a book club that’s relaxed with no home work? Chapters is for you! Bring your coffee and casually discuss what you are reading. Duration is usually an hour. We will meet at Slate’s Mercantile at 140 W Pine St.
  • It’s Yoga Y’all! – Third Saturday of the month at 10:30 a.m. While the library is being renovated, Yoga Y’all will be held in the Betty Wright room at the Arts Center.
  • Know Thy Shelf – Exploring Historical Fiction with Emily – January’s selection is “The Woman with the Cure” by Lynn Cullen. Read the book and discuss online. Follow the book club at: facebook.com/groups/knowthyshelf

Teen & Preteen Events

  • Chess Club – Wednesdays 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. Come join our group and hone your skills. Call the library for more information, 336-789-5108. Chess Club will be meeting at the Blue Bear Cafe at Mount Airy High School.
  • Pre-Teen Book Club – January 16 at 4 p.m. – We will be reading “Coretta Scott King: I Kept On Marching” by Kathleen Krull. In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we will be reading about King’s wife. Copies of the book will be available for pickup at Haymore Baptist Church in Mount Airy.
  • Teen Book Club – January 23 at 4 p.m. – We will be reading “What Was the March On Washington” by Kathleen Krull. In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we will be reading about one of King’s most iconic speeches. Copies of the book will be available for pickup at Haymore Baptist Church in Mount Airy.
